About Kristopher B. King

Principal, King Preservation Management, LLC

Kristopher King advises on many aspects of historic preservation and real estate. Utilizing over a decade of preservation and real estate experience, he offers a comprehensive understanding of historic preservation, restoration and construction, sustainability, investment, development, as well as property and project management.

In the field of historic preservation, Mr. King’s expertise ranges from the detailed analysis and documentation of historic properties and structures to the development of strategies, technical procedures and design solutions to effectively facilitate modern lifestyles while respecting and preserving the historic integrity and value.

His approach for managing changes to historic buildings is informed by a detailed knowledge of architecture and historic construction methodologies, coupled with an appreciation for the vernacular as well as contemporary design.

Mr. King began his career in Charleston with Historic Charleston Foundation. Here he managed every aspect of stewardship and care for over 350 National Register historic properties, overseeing everything from minor repairs to full restorations. He also managed historic resource surveys, National Register of Historic Places nominations, preservation tax credits, and conservation easements.

Additionally he managed the Foundation’s technical outreach program advising and consulting on the treatment of historic properties locally and regionally. He also directed the zoning advocacy program and assisted in the Board of Architectural Review advocacy. It was in this capacity that he developed a detailed understanding of the entitlement process.

Utilizing this experience in entitlements, construction and preservation, Mr. King then applied his focus to infill development, sustainability, and new construction with local green builder/developer WECCO of Charleston. Here Mr. King worked on the development and construction of LEED certified infill projects in Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. This work utilized the most cutting technologies from precast concrete construction to vegetated green roofs. Has managed and developed projects from Fishers Island, NY to Sea Island, GA. ranging from single family houses to large scale mixed use, multifamily and infill projects.

Mr. King is an Adjunct Professor in Historic Preservation at the College of Charleston, and the Clemson University-College of Charleston Graduate Program in Historic Preservation. He also serve son the board of the Preservation Society of Charleston, is a board member of the Charleston Civic Design Center, and the City of Charleston Green Committee. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute and served as an executive committee member for Visioning Charleston 2030, a regional growth exercise.

Mr. King holds a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History with an Integrated tract in Architecture from Trinity College. He is a certified Building Analyst and Envelope Professional with the Building Performance Institute and co-developed and taught the BPI curriculum for energy audits and assessments for historic structures.hardware
